the phone rang at midnight
a young girl pleaded for help
said something was coming
the line went dead
i traced the call to port end

the town was wrapped in fog
buildings were shuttered
not a soul in sight

i found the farm house on the edge of town
it was old and silent
upstairs i found a girl’s room

a pastel drawing lay on her pillow
a map of the woods nearby
an arrow pointed to a hole in the ground
beside a large tree

a storm raged in the distance
while i searched the woods by moonlight

i found a hole beside an old oak tree
i could hear sounds within
inhuman

a rope was tied to the old tree
it led down

i climbed and crawled
losing all sense of time
haunted by distant cries and howls

finally i saw light ahead
and soon emerged into a meadow
the sun was shining and birds singing
i walked toward the center

there i found a young girl
cold and unmoving
she wore an emerald green dress
and blue ribbons in her hair

i bent close and heard no breath
felt her wrist
she was dead

in her hand was a twinflower
and a crumpled note that read
“thank you for finding me”

i looked up and saw her
standing beside her body
she smiled at me
and then was gone
